cinamon sticks

Cinnamon for diabetes type 2 treatment may sound bizarre, but current research is disclosing more secrets of the plant world. Cinnamon tea, honey and cinnamon supplements are also appearing amongst the treaments for diabetes. Spice up your life!

Find natural cinnamon remedies here.

On the downside, as cinnamon contains coumarin, which is a blood thinner, large quantities of cinnamon should be avoided. Purchasing  a coumarin free supplement is the best solution, alternatively, soaking cinamon sticks in water will release the active ingredients  but not the water insoluble coumarin.

Cinnamon has been used for thousand of years by many different cultures as a medicinal aid. Some studies have indicated that cinnamon might improve blood glucose and cholesterol levels in those suffering with type 2 diabetes. Cinnamon and diabetes may sound like an peculiar pairing because when we think of cinnamon we usually think of things we should be avoiding like rich pastries.

Researchers have believed for years that spices might help treat diabetes. Research has shown that cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves, and turmeric have each exhibited good results in raising the action of insulin in the body.

Some may think that this is a myth based on ancient beliefs or a rumor spread by the alternative health crowd. But there is actually an increasing amount of research data concerning the positive effects of cinnamomum cassia, the more common type of cinnamon found in the U.S.

While it has been demonstrated to be impressive in the control of blood sugar, those with type 2, (non-insulin dependent diabetes) appear to be the only beneficiaries. Those with type 1 (insulin dependent diabetes) appear to have received no real benefit.

Type 2 diabetes typically occurs in middle-age and causes the untimely death of 100 million people worldwide every year and has devastating affects on millions of other sufferers like heart disease, stroke and blindness.

It is important to note that cinnamon will not cure your diabetes. It may however provide a reduction in the quantity of insulin you take. It may as well benefit in the prevention of the disease.

Always be sure to check with you doctor or nutritionist before adding cinnamon to your diet. If recommended, use it exactly as suggested. Only a small, daily amount should be needed and can be added to foods and beverages you already consume. Many use the common powder or cinnamon stick. Cinnamon pills are available too, and can be purchased in stores or online.

While cinnamon and diabetes may initially seem like an odd couple, it could be beneficial to look into if you have type 2.

Insulin is a hormone which has significant effects on metabolism and vascular compliance. The most important function is to derive glucose from the blood sore and  make it avaialable to the body, through liver, muscle and fat tissue.

Insulin is one of the most important medicines for patients suffering from diabetes. Diabetes, a disease that hampers blood sugar levels in the body, is a disorder that can cause great damage to the human body. To find out more about the development, discovery and history of this important medicine, read on...

History of Insulin

What is Insulin?

Insulin is actually a hormone in the human body that controls the level of blood sugar. It is produced by the pancreas and plays a very important role in the conversion of sugar, or more appropriately, glucose. With the help of insulin, organs like liver, muscles and fat tissues, absorb glucose from the blood, convert it into glycogen and store it in the body. The fluctuating levels of this hormone are the major cause of Diabetes mellitus, a syndrome that is commonly referred to as diabetes. Insulin is injected to into the body to keep the level of glucose under control.

History of Insulin

Paul Langerhans was a medical student of Berlin university, who discovered a clump of unidentified tissues in 1869, while observing the pancreas. These tissues were later named as Islets of Langerhans, by Edouard Laguesse, a French pathologist. Experts at that time explained that these clump of tissues played an active role in digestion.

In the year 1889, two physicians, Oscar Minkowski and Joseph von Mering, took up research on the basis of Paul Langerhans' discovery. For the purpose of their research they removed the pancreas from a healthy dog. A few days after the pancreas had been removed, the animal keeper observed a swarm of flies near the dog's urine. The presence of flies led to the discovery of sugar in the urine. This relation between blood sugar and pancreas was established by Oscar Minkowski and Joseph von Mering after further studies.

In the year 1901, Eugene Opie undertook further research and discovered Diabetes mellitus, a syndrome caused when the Islets of Langerhans were destroyed, either partially or permanently. In the early 1900's, the phenomenon of diabetes was considered as silent death. Many scientists and physicians made attempts to develop Islets of Langerhans artificially as treatment for low levels of insulin and diabetes. Some noted breakthroughs were achieved by George Ludwig Zuelzer in 1906, E.L. Scott in 1912, and Israel Kleiner in 1919.

Nicolae Paulescu, a Romanian medicine professor, isolated these islets for the first time in a form that was initially known as Pancrein. The first injection of insulin was developed by a Canadian scientist, Frederick Banting. After many years of research and considerable help from Charles Best and James Collip, the team of three managed to isolate islets in the form of insulin. The injection was administered to Leonard Thompson, a 14 year old diabetic. The first dose that was administered on 11th of January 1992, was impure and produced an allergic reaction. After a further 12 hard working days and nights, the team came up with a refined and pure dose that produced miraculous results, without any side effects. Shortly afterwards, a pharmaceutical company, 'Eli Lilly and Company', along with the scientists, produced an improvised version of insulin that could be commercially sold and administered. This insulin was, however, sourced from animals. 'Genentech', another company, was successful in producing biosynthetic human insulin in 1977. In 1982, Genentech and Eli Lilly partnered the first production of biosynthetic human insulin.

Fredric Banting and Charles Best were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923 for their outstanding efforts. Newspaper extracts about the discovery described a scene in the hospital with the lines: "Grieving family members were often in attendance, awaiting death. In one of medicine's more dramatic moments the team went from bed to bed, injecting an entire ward with the new purified extract. Before they had reached the last dying child, the first few were awakening from their coma, to the joyous exclamations of their families".

Their work was highly recognized but some names of scientists, like Nicolae Paulescu, have been lost in the pages of history. This wondrous discovery has helped save an umpteen number of patients suffering from diabetes, from consequences ranging even up to death.

glutathione, essential protein, antioxidant What am I talking about? It is GLUTATHIONE! An essential protein in our bodies at the time of our birth. At about the age of 20, the level of Glutathione in our bodies starts deteriorating.

SO WHAT, you may be asking. The answer is that  is found in every cell of the body.

It is particularly concentrated in the liver which is the main organ for "detoxification." It is also found in the spleen which is the main organ related to our immune defense system. And it is also found in the largest organ of our bodies, our skin!

The medical community has known about this protein since the early 1900's, but had no way to replace it until this research Scientist, Dr. Keller, went into the lab to find a way to replace it.

What he found was that if they gave it in its purest form, as a liquid, the digestglutathione, essential protein, antioxidantive process ate it up before it could be absorbed into the body.

Dr. Keller has used a combination of supplements and herbs combined in capsule form, to enable the body to rejuvenate and rebuild its own supply of Glutathione. So it is really a GLUTATHIONE ACCELERATOR.

Glutathione reaches concentrations that are thousands of times that of the commonly advertised vitamins such as C, E, and A. And it has other multiple functions that include the following purposes:

  • Transports proteins between cells and among the compartments of a cell.
  • Detoxifies heavy metals, pesticides, food preservatives and environmental pollutants among others AFTER the liver detoxifies them by changing them into "Free Radicals."
  • Activates the immune system's first responders to attack the invader and protect it from self-annihilation as free radicals are generated.
  • Regenerates a wide variety of other antioxidants.

It has had such a dramatic effect on me in so many ways. Increased energy, Pain relief, especially for my Arthritic hands, no more Diverticulitis, no more Hypoglycemia or Blood Pressure problems. I know personally, people who are having real relief from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, major debilitating depression, and even pain relief from Cancer treatments.

I can't promise that will happen with everyone, because it goes to the part of the body that is the most in need of it's relief. Just one more thing, I heard Paul Harvey talking about it during a noontime radio program. He said it was going to transform the way Diabetes is being treated. He said it is better than insulin for Diabetes treatment.

It is true that you could buy all these supplements and take them but it would cost a great deal more than this product and would taste awful!! Also how would you know the right amounts to combine to get the desired effect?

natural pain killerAlpha lipoic acid (ALA) is well known for its pain relieving abilities. It is known to be most effective against the burning, numbness and pain that often is associated with diabetes. This is one antioxidant, which works wonders as a pain medication.

Human clinical trials for testing the efficacy of alpha lipoic acid for pain relief have been very encouraging. In one of these trials, participants received 200 milligrams of intravenous alpha lipoic acid daily. After a period of 21 days, significant pain reduction was achieved in most participants.

Alpha lipoic acid is also responsible for rapidly and significantly reducing sensory symptoms and pain related to diabetic neuropathy. Lack of vitamin D has also been linked to pain in many studies and alpha lipoic acid being a trigger in assisting vitamin D working aids in alleviating pain. One key to the effectiveness of alpha lipoic acid in pain relief is its capability of neutralizing both water and fat-soluble free radicals. This means that alpha lipoic acid's power can be utilized in both intracellular and the extra cellular fluid to help the body rid itself of accumulated ingested toxins. Relief is a major concern for most people who suffer from chronic pain, whether it is from diabetes or other causes. Alpha lipoic acid has proved time and again to be a major relaxant and stress reliever.

Diabetics have also found alpha lipoic acid beneficial in reducing symptoms associated with nerve damage such as pain, burning, and numbness. However, supplemental alpha-lipoic acid may cause lower blood glucose levels. To avoid possible hypoglycemia, those with diabetes on anti-diabetic medication should have their blood glucose regularly monitored and anti-diabetic drug dose appropriately adjusted if required.

A note of caution: Due to lack of long-term safety data, alpha lipoic acid should be avoided by pregnant women and nursing mothers.

magnetic therapy for pain reliefThe Attraction Of Magnetic Therapy

Magnetic therapy is an alternative treatment for common ailments. The most commonly treated ailments for that magnetic therapy is used for are arthritis, pain, inflammation, muscle tension, migraines, tumors, asthma, allergies, diabetes and many other joints or healing complaints. Some researchers indicate that magnetic therapy really does work while other scientists believe otherwise. Although magnets have been used to treat medical ailments for thousands of years, there is no scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of magnetic therapy. Of course, there are numerous testimonials from people who will swear by the healing power of magnets. Could it be mind over matter, or do magnets actually have healing properties? It depends on who you ask. Consider that part of the experience is the one to improve your positive energy, not see scientific evidence.

1. Magnetic Therapy

Magnetic therapy has been found in ancient Chinese medical texts and even in some Hindu religious documents. The Egyptians, Romans and Greeks have also used magnetic therapy to treat a variety of ailments from arthritis to depression. In todays world millions of people are turning to magnetic therapy to treat a wide range of medical conditions, from your average person to many professional athletes. The belief in the effectiveness of magnetic therapy is astronomical. Magnets are being sold in many forms, the most popular being the magnetic jewelry like bracelets sold through commercials, infomercials and now through the internet and can range from $5 to $800 in price. Magnetic jewelry may come in assorted sizes, shapes and styles containing an internal iron within the magnet that is assumed to arouse the production in the blood stream that controls the content of oxygen. Its also believed that a form of stabilization develops in the nervous system to ease pain or discomfort.

2. Alternative Health

Many alternative practitioners believe that magnets really do have healing power and state that the latest research indicates that magnetic therapy really does work. Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas performed a controlled study by using real magnets and fake magnets on patients who suffered leg pain from post-polio syndrome. In this study, 76% of the patients who were treated with the real magnet felt relief from the pain, whereas 18% of the patients treated with the fake magnet felt pain relief. Other researchers have shown that magnets have helped to relieve pain in patients suffering from Fibromyalgia. This study had patients sleep on magnetic mattresses and patients who slept on ordinary mattresses. The patients who slept on the magnetic mattresses experienced an exceptional pain relief than those who slept on the ordinary mattresses. In Diabetic neuropathy, research concluded the effectiveness of using magnetic foot pads to treat diabetes related complaints such as tingling; pain and numbness in the foot have also been successfully treated by using magnetic foot pads. Nearly 80% of patients suffering from this diabetes related complaints claimed the use of magnets greatly relieved the pain, tingling and numbness.

3. Relaxation Uses

When magnets are held against skin, capillary walls relax, and increase blood flow to the painful areas in your body. Magnets are also used to prevent muscle spasms at the base of pain by intervening with muscle contractions and by interfering with electrochemical reactions within the nerve cells, to impede the ability to transmit messages of pain to the brain. There are many prescriptions and over the counter pain relieving drugs available, the attraction of magnetic therapy is that it has no risky side effects.

4. Starting With Magnetic Therapy

If youre just starting off, it may be best to begin with an earth metal neodymium-boron coin shaped magnet. These magnets work great and cost less than other magnets on the market. All magnetism is measured in gauss. The higher the magnetic gauss, the greater the pain relief is. The ordinary refrigerator magnet is around ten gauss, making it too weak to effectively penetrate the skin and relieve anything other than a minor bruise. Medical magnets can range from 400 to just over 10,000 gauss.

5. Securing Your Magnet

Place the magnet over the afflicted area. You can secure it with adhesive bandages or tape. If the magnetic does not provide any relief over the next few days, try repositioning it. If the repositioning fails to work after three to four weeks, then you can safely assume that magnetic therapy is not going to work for you. Try switching to another magnet or one with a higher gauss, or consult your doctor about other methods you could use.

Diabetic Foot Treatment for Ulcers  -  An Effective Natural Solution

Studies conducted in 1991 by a medical research team compared a conleg ulcer honeyventional method of burn treatment commonly used to treat burns, pressure ulcers and leg ulcers, with a topical application of honey* applied to the surface of the wound. Burn patients were divided into two groups.

The burns of patients in one group were cleaned with saline solution and pure, undiluted, unprocessed honey was applied daily. Burns of the other group were cleaned and covered with gauze that was soaked in a medicated dressing (5% silver sulfadiazine) that was changed daily.

Results showed that within seven days 91 percent of the infected wounds treated with honey were free of infection, compared to less than 7 percent of the burns treated with the medicated dressing. Within 15 days, 87 percent of the honey treated wounds were healed; whereas only 10 percent of the other group wounds were healed. Patients treated with honey experienced less irritation, more relief of pain, and no allergic reactions or side effects.

Studies done by an earlier medical research team in 1988 showed that various types of wounds and skin ulcers which had not previously responded to conventional methods of treatment such as antibiotics and medicated dressings responded favorably to a topical honey treatment.
Wounds and ulcer types treated with honey included: gangrene of the skin, burn wounds, topical ulcers, bedsores, and diabetic ulcers. After the wounds were cleaned with saline, honey and clean bandages were applied daily. Infected wounds that had not responded to conventional treatments were free of infection within 7 days of the first honey application.
Following treatment with honey, dead tissue was quickly replaced with healthy tissue. In some cases, diabetic ulcers were successfully treated with honey and skin grafts, thus preventing amputation. Apparently, the antibacterial properties of honey allow it to work on wounds and skin ulcers in the same manner it works on burns.

* The honey used must be raw unprocessed honey and it must state somewhere on the label that it is "unheated".

Neuropathy or Nerve Pain associated with Diabetes can be avoided if action is taken soon enough. Mineral supplements for balance available here.

There are three major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Diabetes is rooted in the body's inability either to make or to use insulin. Your body needs insulin, a hormone, to be able to use glucose, which comes from the food you eat, for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose stays in the blood, creating high levels of blood sugar. Over time, this buildup can cause damage to your kidneys, heart, nerves, eyes, and other organs.

There are many factors that can contribute to developing diabetes like genetics, pancreatic diseases, obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and other illnesses. However, most people with diabetes do not suffer from the disease directly. The difficulties of diabetes arise not from the disease itself but from the complications that come with it like nerve pain. If you want to avoid suffering from nerve pain and diabetes, you'd better get your act together as soon as possible.

Focus on lifestyle changes.
With diabetes, lifestyle changes are a must. People with diabetes must be careful about their weight, what they eat, their habits, and their fitness level. Experts even advise losing as much as five to 10% of the total body weight and exercising for at least 30 minutes daily. A balanced and low-fat diet with large amounts of dietary fiber is also recommended to help keep sugar levels down.

Take medications if you have to.
Sometimes preexisting conditions like heart problems and high blood pressure can contribute to your risks of getting diabetes. As such, it is important to pay attention to your other health problems if you want to put a stop to diabetes. Take prescription drugs if you have to but remember to consult your doctor about it and work out a plan with him about managing these conditions and diabetes as well.

Go for fun, low-impact activities.
Sometimes, pain is not the reason people do not want to exercise. What stops them is the fear of pain or worsening their condition. Starting with fun, low-impact exercise and the knowledge that you are doing something safe can encourage you to get moving. Some low-impact exercises that you can do include swimming, yoga, and cycling. You can even up the fun factor by doing these exercises with a group of friends. You can swim leisurely laps with a buddy, practice new yoga poses with a friend, or just go cycling outdoors for a change of scenery. Just remember to go at your own pace and increase it only when you feel comfortable enough doing so.

Having diabetes puts you at higher risk of diseases like heart and circulation problems. Before starting any treatment program, consult with your doctor for a general check up. This way, he can determine what type of activity will be suitable for you and give you a heads up on your current physical and health status. You can also ask your doctor to teach you how to check and monitor your blood sugar levels which are important if you want to start treatment and keep diabetes and nerve pain under control.

Special Note: The American Medical Association does not accept homeopathy, but it doesn't reject it either. "The AMA encourages doctors to become aware of alternative therapies and use them when and where appropriate," says AMA spokesman Jim Fox. "Even professionals who practice homeopathy warn that nothing in medicine--either conventional or alternative--is absolute", states Mr. Fox.

The key to dealing with your pain is understanding the root cause of pain. ALL pain, is due to nerve damage agitation, no exceptions. The level of nerve agitation and resultant pain is directly related to the inflammation present in the painful area which reduces the level of blood and oxygen flow into the
infected area.

The most effective pain relief medications, cause the nerve ends to relax and allow the blood and oxygen to flow back into the infected area to effectively cut-off the signals to the spinal cord and therefore to the brain resulting in pain relief. You still have the problem, you just do not feel it as much.

Non-narcotic, non-addictive, all natural pain relief medications are available from The Centre for Pain Relief. Check out their website to determine if one of their products can help you with your painful condition.

More and more people are turning to small compact electronic devices like TENs machinesNerve pain relief, TENS to bring them pain relief without having to depend on drugs that can often have unwanted side effects. These small digital machines can be worn unobtrusively while carrying out normal day to day activities.

What is TENs, how does it work and what sort of pain relief can it be used for?

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation where transcutaneous means through the skin. A TENs machine produces small electrical impulses which are transmitted from the machine through the skin by means of a wire connected to a small conductive patch which is placed on the skin.

TENS machines are believed to work in a two ways. The small electrical signal they transmit blocks pain signals from the body's sensory nerves to the brain resulting in pain relief. The signals generated by the TENS machines can also encourage your body to release endorphins, natures own pain relieving 'feel good' hormone.

A study in Sweden showed that backache is one type of pain which was best treated with the use of TENS machines. It also showed that TENS machines were the only painkillers required by 70 per cent of women in labour.

More recently some TENs machines are available with an electrical probe which can be used to stimulate acupuncture points to bring pain relief. While almost all TENs machines have cautions about placing the electrode pads on the head and neck these 'accu TENs' machines will permit users to stimulate the accu points or 'channels' elsewhere on the body to bring relief to head or neck pain.

Placement of electrode pads is all important for effective pain relief. Usually the pads are placed close to the source of the pain particularly with muscle pain or joint pain. In the case of sciatic nerve pain the electrode pads are likely to be placed either side of the spinal column and the top part of the affected leg. Your health care provider should advise on the best point to place the pads for optimum pain relief. Correct placement is very important and sometimes may take a little trial and error with careful reference to the manufactures guidelines. Pads should never be placed near the eyes or over the nerves from the neck to the throat or brain.

Most TENs machines have three main program modes, Conventional (some machines may refer to this as Normal or Constant}, Burst and Modulation. Each mode has subtle differences in the effect they have. Usually a combination of these modes will work best to provide maximum short and long term pain relief. With the TENs machine set to the Conventional mode (frequency between 90 and 120Hz and pulse width between 80uS and 200uS) the pain relief tends to be short lasting after the machine is switched off. To obtain longer lasting pain relief you should choose a Burst mode, or select a lo-rate TENs program (usually between 2Hz to 5Hz with a pulse width close to 200uS). The burst or 'lo TENs' mode encourages the release of endorphins and gives longer lasting pain relief.

All TENs machine will allow you to control the level of electrical signal and once again it is import to set the machine to the optimum setting. If you set the level too high your muscles may start to twitch. You should adjust the TENs machine to a level where you can just feel a slight tingling sensation.

Many TENs machines are powered by a 9V battery. The downside of this is that the 9V batteries only last a few days so it is well worth while to invest is some high capacity NiMh rechargeable batteries accompanied by a battery charger. The only other part which will require frequent replacing is the electrode pads and very rarely the electrode leads. The internet offers a wide range of sources for all these commodities.

If you are a first time TENs user you might find it takes a few days or weeks to obtain maximum relief.

TENS machines should only be used on the advice of a doctor or other health professionals. They may not be suitable for all types of pain or all conditions. Always follow the manufactures instructions supplied with the machine. TENS machines should never be used by people who have a pacemaker or have heart problems. Pregnant women should avoid using TENs machines as the affects on the unborn baby are not known. Never place TENs electrodes on your head or neck.
